Hoover SmartWash Pet Complete Carpet Cleaner Gets Dirty

A while back, our friends from Hoover Vacuums said you should try out our ONEPWR Cordless Vacuum lineup to tackle your mess. I told them I didn’t think they understood the size of the mess a house full of pets and kids can make… in an hour. They persisted and we were impressed with the cordless lineup. But I said okay, let’s bring out the big guns. So they did… with the Hoover SmartWash Pet Complete Automatic Carpet Cleaner.

The Golden Rule

Our Golden Retriever, Gus, and his half sister, Apple, who visits often love to roll in the dirt and then come in and sleep on the rug in our bedroom. They’re cute, so we can’t complain. But after a few rolly-polly sessions these furry monsters have left the carpet a little… drab. Oh, and as hairy as a mohair sweater. Seriously… golden retrievers… fur storm.

Hoover Smart Wash Pet Complete

So I vacuumed up the carpets first as best as I could (three times!) to get up as much hair as possible (you’ll see how that went…) That’s not a fault of our vacuum… that’s just life with Goldens. But with the carpet prepped it was time to really get clean.

Hoover SmartWash

Once I had the tank filled with water and then added the Hoover Paws & Claws Carpet Shampoo with StainGuard to the reservoir it was time to get scrubbing. Push the carpet cleaner forward and the brushes spin and the shampoo gets a shampooing. There’s a handy little light that illuminates that says “wash” in case you forget.

Hoover Smart Wash Dry Only

Pull the unit backwards and it switches over to “dry” mode and you can watch it suck all the liquid out of the carpet. Oh and… watch the fill reservoir flood itself with disturbingly murky looking water. Literally swamp water. From our carpets! What’s nice is that if you get a little too scrubby with the “wash” feature and saturate your carpet, you can hit the “Dry only” button and do simply that! I had to give extra attention to a few areas and the Heatforce feature on the Dry Only setting sucks out the moisture pretty quickly so you can get back to using your space.

Features Pet Lovers Will Love Back

Luckily we haven’t had any problems recently, but for spot cleaning, the unit comes with a “Spot Chaser” pre-treat spray wand. Paired with a bottle of Oxy Spot Chaser you can hit the “wee little spots” early before you bring out the big boy.

Hoover SmartWash Clean Up

Clean up is also EXTREMELY easy. Most of the cleaner opens up and disassembles in such a way that when you start harvesting a spool of pet hair (like I did), it keeps going, but is still easy to clean out. Like I said above… I vacuumed this carpet thoroughly three times before using the carpet cleaner and I still pulled that much hair off the carpet while scrubbing. Gross…

The Verdict?

Carpet cleaners are like power washers in a sense that the results are easy to come by and look amazing. While you can’t spray your name onto the driveway with a carpet cleaner, the amount of grossness that ends up in the fill tank should shock and impress you.

Hoover Carpet Cleaner Before and After

We’ve used spot cleaners and entry level carpet cleaners in the past with mixed results. Short of having our carpets and rugs professionally cleaned, this is about as clean as I’ve seen our floors since the day we unrolled them. At $299.99 at the time of this review, the Hoover SmartWash Pet Complete Carpet Cleaner might seem like it has a hefty price tag. Given the bounce back in colors and cleanliness we’re seeing in our rugs, it’s definitely a product I’m surprised (especially as pet owners) that we’ve lived without for so long. If you have pets and have rugs or carpets… this is an easy to decision given it’s effectiveness and ease of use.

Thanks. We have a golden and a muddy yard and this was very helpful to see how it worked with the amount of hair that goldens leave behind.
