I Let AI Help Me Buy Appliances — And It Paid Off Big Time

Appliance shopping is one of those things that seems simple… until you actually start doing it. Too many models, too many fake “sales,” too many conflicting reviews. And if you’re anything like me, you can’t just pick something and move on. Oh no.

I will obsessively search for the best deal.
I will read every single review site out there.
I’ll look at all major models that fit my needs — even ones that don’t.
Then I’ll compare and contrast until my brain hurts.
I’ll build a spreadsheet with filters, categories, and color-coding.
And only then will I make a decision.

That was the process. All manual. All consuming. Every time.

But this year, I did something different. I let AI help me. And honestly? I may never go back.

Step 1: Using AI to Cut Through the Noise

Before I even started pricing things out, I used ChatGPT to help me find the best washer and dryer setup for a family of five with pets — which, spoiler alert, is not a one-size-fits-all answer.

I asked:

  • “Which washer models are best for heavy daily use?”

  • “What actually helps with pet hair?”

  • “What will look best in my new laundry room?”

  • “Which models have the fewest maintenance issues?”

And it gave me instant breakdowns of GE, LG, and Samsung — complete with pros, cons, and user experience summaries that would’ve taken me hours to dig through on my own. In five minutes, I had a shortlist of top contenders — not from random sponsored articles, but based on features that actually matched our needs.

Step 2: I Thought I Found the Right Deal… Then AI Found a Better One

At first, I was leaning toward a solid mid-tier GE washer/dryer set. Not bad, nothing fancy. Reasonably priced. I even felt kind of proud of the pick.

Then AI pointed out that for about the same price, I could get GE’s flagship 870 series instead — which included:

  • SmartDispense (fills once, washes for weeks)

  • UltraFresh vent system (no musty smells)

  • Pet hair removal cycle (legit game changer)

  • More capacity, better build, and smarter features

Basically, I was about to settle for “pretty good,” and AI helped me unlock “best in class” without spending a penny more. That’s exactly the kind of bang-for-your-buck discovery I live for.

Step 3: Side-by-Side Comparisons That Didn’t Break My Brain

After locking in the model, I put AI to work comparing it across:

  • Best Buy

  • Lowe’s

  • Home Depot

  • GE.com

  • And even specialty retailers like AJ Madison and Appliance Depot

But it didn’t just compare price tags. I asked it to break it down:

  • After tax

  • With installation

  • With a 3-year protection plan

  • With delivery

  • And even local stock when available

Normally, this would have taken me hours to put into a spreadsheet. AI? Gave me a full, clear comparison in seconds.

Step 4: Don’t Skip the Local Guys

One thing I almost overlooked — and AI reminded me — was checking local appliance dealers. Smaller independents sometimes offer better service, open-box deals, or price matching. Even if I didn’t end up buying locally, I called around and was glad I did. One place even offered to match my online price and toss in delivery.

Step 5: Pulling the Trigger — And Holding the Line

In the end, I grabbed the GE 870 washer and dryer set from Best Buy during their 4th of July sale:

  • Free installation

  • 3-year Geek Squad protection for just $99.99 per appliance

  • Total: $1,973.25

Considering the typical price for this setup with installation and a protection plan is around $2,600–$2,750, I saved at least $625 — maybe more. That’s not just a win — that’s a win I feel every time I toss in a load of laundry.

That said — the original plan was to buy a set for our full size laundry room to support the whole family, but then buy a tower unit (LG WashTower) for the second laundry area (aka the “pocket laundry”) that’s in our primary suite. AI recommended I wait. It helped me analyze pricing history and seasonal patterns, and Labor Day or Black Friday tends to drop that unit by $150–$250. Since it’s not essential right now, I’m holding off for a better deal.

Why It’s Worth Using AI for Appliance Shopping

I didn’t use AI to replace my decision-making.
I used it to supercharge it.

Instead of hours spent hunting for the best deal, second-guessing features, and trying to decode marketing speak, I just asked smarter questions and got clearer answers.

I still obsess. I still care about value. But now I’ve got a tool that can handle the grunt work while I stay focused on what matters most: finding the right product at the right price, from the right store, with the right protection plan.

Final Thought?  It’s here. Embrace it.

If you’re wired like me — a DIYer who likes to know all the options, weigh every detail, and make smart decisions — AI is your new best friend. Use it. Ask it everything. Then ask again.

And when you’re ready to make the call? You’ll know you’ve got the best setup for your family, your space, and your budget.

I’ll follow up after Labor Day to see how the LG WashTower pricing shakes out. Until then, I’ll be planning out the new the garage shop… probably making another spreadsheet.
